Chanda is a proud mother of two children. Her son is preparing for his secondary school exams, and her daughter is studying for a bachelor’s degree in psychology in the UK. But this incredible progress wasn’t always guaranteed.
Chanda’s story began when she was just 14, joining a Dhaka weaving course. It was there she met Kumar, the man she would later marry. Together, they moved to Kathmandu in search of better work—and that’s when everything changed.
Chanda discovered New SADLE, a fair-trade organisation supporting people through skilled, dignified employment. They happened to be looking for a Dhaka weaver, and Chanda was the perfect fit.
Since 1996, she has been working in the Dhaka weaving section—and today, she proudly holds the role of supervisor. Her dedication and skill have not only supported her family but also contributed to the creation of stunning handmade textiles sold around the world.
Thanks to your support—through the purchase of fair-trade products—organisations like New SADLE are able to assist artisans like Chanda in accessing educational scholarships for their children. That’s why her daughter can study abroad. That’s why her son has the tools he needs to succeed.
Chanda is just one of many women who balance craft, care, and hope in every thread they weave.
