Rubina was just a teenager when leprosy began affecting her body—starting with skin patches, then facial paralysis, and loss of feeling in her feet. At first, doctors didn’t recognise the signs, and Rubina lived in fear and shame. With no answers and her confidence shattered, Rubina hid from her friends, terrified and ashamed.
Rubina's Story
When Rubina was a teenager, she noticed patches on her skin—something many now recognise as an early sign of leprosy. But Rubina and her family didn’t know. It wasn’t until a painful ulcer developed on her foot that she sought help.
At first, doctors treated only the wound. As time passed, her condition worsened. Her face began to swell. She lost movement on one side of her face, her lip drooped, and her eye could no longer close. With no answers and her confidence shattered, Rubina hid from her friends, terrified and ashamed.
Eventually, a doctor trained by the Nepal Leprosy Fellowship recognised the signs. Rubina was diagnosed with leprosy.
By then, the damage had spread to her feet, she couldn’t even wear shoes. She was immediately started on Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT), the medicine that cures leprosy. She’s now three-quarters of the way through her treatment, and the feeling in her feet has started to return.
Rubina finally has something she had lost: hope.
